Tennis on Campus – USTA Campus Championship-Intermountain
Champions: University of Colorado Gold

Finalists: University of Colorado Black

University of Colorado Teams - 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place

The USTA Tennis on Campus program is designed to provide college students with the opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking, and rivaled competition through tennis without the rigors of a varsity program. Each year the USTA Intermountain Section offers a Sectional Championship for the Program. Club teams from across the USTA Intermountain Section gather together to have fun and compete while fighting for a Bid into the USTA National Campus Championship.
For the 4th year in a row, the USTA Campus Championship- Intermountain was held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Darling Tennis Center. Approximately 70 students representing six different campuses, competed from, Feb. 27-28th, to see which Campus would be representing the USTA Intermountain at Nationals. These schools included the University of Colorado, Colorado State University, the University of Denver (DU), the University of Utah (UU), Utah Valley University (UVU), and Montana State University (MSU). The University of Colorado actually brought enough players to make three teams, CU-Gold, CU-Black, and CU-Buffs, and Colorado State University brought enough players to fill two teams, CSU-Green and CSU-Rams. Nine teams totaled the Championship.
The format of the Championship is World TeamTennis. Each match consists of five no-ad sets and includes: men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and one set of mixed doubles. On the first day, the teams were divided into three Pools of three teams. Each Pool then played a round robin within itself to determine which team would place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in that Pool. All teams that placed 1st in their Pool moved onto the Championship Division, the Gold Division. All teams that placed 2nd in their Pool were placed in the Silver Division and all the teams that placed 3rd, the Bronze Division.
After the first day of competition, all three teams from the University of Colorado advanced into the Gold Division. CU-Gold eventually came out on top, beating their teammates from CU-Black and CU-Buffs to win the entire Championship. This win also gave the University of Colorado an automatic bid into the USTA National Campus Championship, April 16-18th, in Surprise, Arizona. CU-Gold went through the whole Championship without ever losing a match. Congratulations to the University of Colorado and to all the teams that competed.
Results for day 1 and day 2 are listed below. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Teams within each Pool and Division were determined by head-to-head match wins, and in the event of a tie, winning percentage was used to break the tie.
The event was a great success, and a special thanks to all the volunteers, the Bagel Cafe, Tennis Warehouse, WTT and the Darling Tennis Center.
